Spending Time with God

I firmly believe that God made each of us in a beautifully unique way. Our abilities, talents, and traits reflect a beautifully complex and creative God. See my Made in the Image of God Devotional for more on that topic.

It’s easy to get stuck in a pattern where we’re always spending God in the same way: reading the Bible and praying. Maybe also reading a morning devotional. Now don’t get me wrong, those are wonderful disciplines and important hallmarks of a strong faith. However, it’s not the only way to spend time with God. There are millions of ways to have a unique “date” with God. There are as many unique ways to have a devotional as there are unique human beings on this earth. God made you to connect with Him in a special way or maybe in a variety of ways.

Friends, it’s time to explore! God is fun, He’s creative, He’s adventurous, He’s funny, He’s delightful. He’s not just serious all the time. So what do you like to do for fun? Hike? Color? Paint? Sing? Listen to music? Sew? Read? Drive? When God created you, He made you with the ability to love doing those things. So today, spend time with God in a way unique to you. Talk with Him, focus on Him, ponder a spiritual question, read a book (I suggest Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas).

Let’s not limit God. He’s so much more than we can ever imagine.

“The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.” -Exodus 31:1-5

“But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” -Isaiah 64:8
