I’m an intense, passionate person. God created me with a single-minded devotion to everything I care about. These passions sometimes consume me until I burn out from all the time, effort, and energy I put into my passion project (whatever it may be). Burn out leads me to Netflix, apathy, and inability to deal with small annoyances. This, as you can imagine, can be a rather vicious cycle.
And here’s the thing: I usually leave God out of the process. I get an idea and go for it full steam ahead without regard to sustainability or asking God how He wants me to do things. What if I flipped this process on its head? What if, when I have an idea, I paused and talked to God about the idea. What if I asked Him what He thought and how I could implement the idea without the inevitable burn out, frustration, apathy.
God does not speak to me in an audible voice. He usually speaks to me through bringing songs to my head, images to my mind, and through the voices of godly people in my life who guide me in the right direction. How does God speak to you? It’s different for everyone, but it’s important to think about the subtle ways in which God leads us. It can be hard when we read the Old Testament and see how God spoke so clearly to Adam, Moses, Elijah, etc.
Friend, remember that God also spoke in a whisper. He is not limited in the way He communicates. He pursues us constantly, beautifully. He speaks to us in a way that will uniquely meet the needs of each individual. It will not look the same for everyone.
And He created us with passions, dreams, hope. So let’s sit down today and dream with God. Tell Him about your desires. He’s not a genie who grants all our wishes. If He did that, we’d all be in a lot of trouble-let’s face it our desires are often selfish. Yet He’s so much better. He’s a God who so intensely loves us that He withheld nothing from us. While we are still sinners, He has given us salvation, acceptance, and love through the sacrifice of His only Son. The things He gives are good gifts and they will grow us even when painful.
And He’s knows what’s best for you. Let’s tell God our dreams and be open to His guidance, love, and delight in us. Oh, how He delights in you today. He takes such joy in being with His children. He loves dreaming with you. What a lovely picture of a loving God.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness.” -Zephaniah 3:17
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” -Romans 5:8
“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.” -1 Kings 19:11-13
